Pew Survey: Half of Americans See AI as a Threat, Only 10% as an Opportunity

Americans increasingly perceive artificial intelligence as a source of anxiety. According to a recent Pew Research survey conducted in June 2025 among 5,023 adults, 50% of respondents admitted that the development of AI causes them concern, and only 10% noted a feeling of excitement.
The study revealed a contradiction: 73% of participants are willing to use AI for everyday tasks, yet 61% demand increased control over its implementation. More than half (57%) stated that they feel a lack of real influence over how technologies enter their lives.

The main concerns are related to the loss of human skills. More than 53% of Americans believe that AI will negatively impact creative thinking, and half are convinced that it will worsen the quality of interpersonal relationships. Only a few respondents expect the opposite: 16% hope for an increase in creativity, and 5% for strengthened social connections.
The report also points to generational differences. Although younger people are more tech-savvy, they are more pessimistic: 61% of respondents under 30 are sure that AI will weaken creativity, whereas only 42% of those over 65 think so.
These data align with global trends. According to Stanford University’s AI Index study, residents of developed countries increasingly show ambivalence towards AI: they highly value the efficiency of technologies but trust the companies that create them less and less. More than half of Americans admitted that they are unable to distinguish human content from algorithm-generated content.
