Harvard Introduces AI Model PDGrapher for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy

Harvard Medical School introduced the artificial intelligence PDGrapher, which has the potential to change the approach to treating severe diseases. The system analyzes biological data and identifies gene-drug pairs that potentially restore normal cell function. The AI not only suggests combinations but also explains the mechanisms of their action.

The development is focused on treating Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, as well as rare disorders, including X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism. Unlike traditional algorithms that capture statistical correlations, PDGrapher identifies therapeutic combinations capable of stopping or reversing the progression of pathological processes.

Researchers note that combining predictive and explanatory functions can significantly reduce the time and cost of developing new treatment methods. The system selects promising options at the cellular level, increasing the efficiency of subsequent laboratory and clinical tests.

The presentation of PDGrapher coincided with the growing interest in the application of AI in medicine. Previously, algorithms were used for data analysis and visualization, but now they are advancing to the level of fundamental biology — from mapping genetic networks to drug modeling.

The Harvard team has already tested the model on real biological datasets. PDGrapher confirmed known connections between genes and drugs and also identified new, previously unexplored combinations. The next step is conducting laboratory and clinical trials.

Experts believe that the project could be a step towards transitioning from universal therapies to personalized treatment strategies. Its significance is compared to achievements like DeepMind’s AlphaFold, which transformed protein structure prediction, and Insilico Medicine’s solutions, which introduced generative models in drug discovery.

If PDGrapher proves effective at the clinical level, it will be evidence that artificial intelligence not only accelerates scientific discoveries but also paves the way for the therapy of previously incurable diseases.
